Mumbai-based multimedia artist and curator, Riyas Komu have enhanced a number of Outlook editions, including the latest one—Errors, Omissions and Insertions. His oeuvre largely critiques the state machinery and bigotry, and questions identity crisis through political movements, polarisation of society through religion and migration. Mahatma Gandhi is a recurring figure in his works; most notable of these is hyper-realistic painting titled, Gandhi From Kochi, looks at the Indian leader as a symbol of hope and resistance, especially when political parties fluctuate between condemning or praising him, depending on their agenda. His bronze and wood sculpture in Fourth World upholds BR Ambedkar as an iconic figure, a great leveller of the masses by his writing of the Indian Constitution. Fragrance of a Funeral is a comment on atrocities of wars. Komu does not separate politics from art as he believes art is a reflection of the times.
