The Drum Also Waltzes Those pieces of skin have seen some loving ministrations alright. It's Ustad Alla Rakha's rhythm units, no less, put up for charity auction. You can almost hear them...mincing teentaal, playful khaalis, the perfectly timed sonic boom of the baayan. They've been part of some of the most iconic Indian music. Respect.

With Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain who says of Ravi Shankar: 'He has been one of the few instrumentalists — probably the first one — to offer a spotlight on an accompanist. Before him, you never heard of an instrumentalist putting his instrument down, keeping time and letting the tabla-player take off. The credit in bringing the importance of the tabla accompanist to the forefront is probably singularly his.... A lot of what I am is definitely inspired through his personality, and not just musically speaking — personally speaking as well. My personality, the way I speak, the way I present myself, the words I choose — everything.'
