Former External Affairs Minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha displays the Phukan Commission report to the media in New Delhi. Disputing the government's contentions on the report, the BJP today charged it with rejecting the findings on "flimsy grounds" and said it proved its "obnoxious and vindictive" attitude towards the Oppositon. Sinha said that contrary to the government's claim, the report says in an accompanying note that "there was no prima facie establishment of charges" against then Defence Minister George Fernandes. The report's findings, earlier tabled in the Parliament, were rejected by the government as "bereft" of reasons as the panel had not gone into the allegation of corruption. Laying the report in the two Houses, the government said it was not bound to table the conclusion as it was "part report" of the Commission but it was doing so on the direction of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

Tuesday 28 June In a move designed to send a clear message to his detractors within the party, BJP president LK Advani dropped Yashwant Sinha from the 'reconstituted' panel of spokespersons in the wake of his criticism of Advani for his controversial remarks on Mohammed Ali Jinnah and his recent attack on Jharkhand CM Arjun Munda. The former External Affairs Minister had only last week refuted speculation that he may quit the party and was asked not to air his grievances in public, and to raise them within the party forum. The other four designated spokespersons -- Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Manavendra Singh and Prakash Javadekar -- were retained thus making it clear that the "reconstitution" exercise was only intended to sack Sinha.
