Uttam Sengupta

Uttam Sengupta I was in college when I sent my first piece for publication to Anees Jung, then editor of Youth Times. In a matter of days, I received a rejection slip but before I could beat a hasty retreat to the college canteen, I noticed a letter sticking out. Signed by Anees, it said that while she could not publish what I had sent, she’d be happy to carry a piece on “To be young and in Ranchi”. Overjoyed, I wrote it the same evening and sent it. It was duly published and I got my first payment, a princely Rs 250!
