People paying last respects to the mortal remains of Zohra Sehgal in New Delhi.
In a conversation with Khushwant Singh published in the Telegraph in 2004, Zohra Sehgal had said: "When I go to sleep, I try to keep myself smiling. So that when I die, I have a smile on my lips. And I want electric cremation. I don’t want any poems or fuss after that. And for heaven’s sake, don’t bring back my ashes. Flush them down the toilet if the crematorium refuses to keep them. I tell all, if they tell you Ammi is dead, or my friends, ki Zohraji mar gayi, I want you to give a big laugh. Think about the funny things. My funny face."

Rest in peace

But the alliance happened in the autumn of their lives. Shabana jokes that the secret of their long-lasting marriage is that they’re never together.

Thursday 26 October
Meanwhile, Shabana Azmi became the first Indian recipient of the prestigious International Gandhi Peace Prize in London, after such luminaries in the past as the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But after her acceptance speech she was confronted with a question on the current veil controversy raging in Britain, and her answer was very simple: "The Quran speaks about women wearing clothes to cover her modesty. A woman is supposed to cover herself to be modest. She does not need to cover her face. A time has come for a debate on the issue". Lo! It was as if all the regressive and patriarchal mullahs back home were suddenly out of the woodwork. Imam Bukhari of Delhi's jama masjid was quick to attack her once again:" She is not a Muslim, she is just a 'naachne gaane waali aurat' — a woman who sings and dances — and she should confine herself to her profession and must not speak on things she has no knowledge about." Maulana Mahmood Madani of the influential Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind joined in, but prominent Shia clerics and well-known liberals such as Arif Mohammed Khan and Syeda Hameed have spoken out agreeing with Shabana Azmi's argument, pointing out that there is no compulsion to cover the face in the Koran.
