This is the cap that spawned a thousand imitations way back in 1967 (thank god they didn’t take to wearing flowers). Jewel Thief, though, wins for wholesome entertainment—songs by S.D. Burman, a script that’s a suspenseful comic caper, Dev Anand, Vyjayanthimala’s screen presence and, on top of it all, the foursome of Tanuja, Helen, Faryal and Anju Mahendru.

In Brass Relief How does one immortalise the forever? A brass statue of debatable likeness is hardly the most dignified way to go about it. Ahhh, to hell with the brass tacks. One year after Dev Anand, Mumbai has Raju and Rosie back together. Cue Kishore and Lata, “Gaata Rahe Mera Dil...

The Charm That Never Gets Old It is a much-bandied about term in tinsel town today, but how else to describe Dev Anand if not as ‘evergreen’? Ageless, at 88, the veteran actor is as indefatigable as ever, both helming and starring in a sequel to his 1970s hit Hare Rama Hare Krishna and genre-jumping in murder mystery Chargesheet.

Magnestism Whoever said garish scarves make for good lady-repellants clearly hadn’t met Dev Anand. The man has sported a laundry list of mufflers for much of his life and it still draws them like moths. Was it his flame or his cravat that had Chargesheet’s Devshri Khanduri enthralled so?

Photograph by Dayanita Singh Untitled Masterji series, 1993 Yes, it’s Dev Anand behind the wheel, but the picture wasn’t about him. It was rather a tribute to choreographer Saroj Khan or Masterji, who made Madhuri the dhak dhak sensation and sexed up the heroine’s item song. Sushmita and Aishwarya’s conquest of the universe and world came a year later. Till this point, though, sex appeal is still encased in sheer stockings. Anu Agarwal, a fleeting vision, is the femme fatale and this Contessa here is playing a Mercedes!

Sunday May 18, 2008
Dev Anand is riding high. After the phenomenal success of his autobiography, he was in Cannes this week-- seen here with business tycoon Srichand Hinduja at the latter's Cannes villa. The 84-year-old actor is making his first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, now in its 61st year, because his film Guide was to be screened in the classic section of the film festival 43 years after it was written and directed by the lead actor’s younger brother, Vijay Anand.
