US President Donald Trump has been actively putting out tweets, issuing warnings to Tehran, two days after a drone strike killed a top Iranian general in Iraq.
In a tweet defending Friday's drone strike assassination of a top Iranian general in Iraq, Trump said 52 represents the number of Americans held hostage at the US embassy in Tehran for more than a year starting in late 1979.
"Following the martyrdom of the glorious general haj Qasem Soleimani, I name Brigadier General Esmail Qaani as the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement posted on his official website.
In a speech aired on state TV, Rouhani said the country's economy had stabilised despite punishing US measures against its senior leaders, banking and finance sectors.
Meanwhile, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that his country remains unbowed by pressure exerted by the United States and its "insults" against the Islamic republic.
Iran’s ties with the US have strained further after the latter re -imposed sanctions after Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers.
Khamenei reiterated that Iran would not engage in any negotiations with the administration of US President Donald Trump, despite his offer of unconditional talks.
