The first lido in the United Kingdom powered by geothermal energy has been inaugurated in Cornwall. The Jubilee Pool in Penzance is filled with natural salt water with views of St. Michael’s Mount.

Here's how it work: the water is kept at 35°C constantly using warm water drawn from a geothermal well. This heat is transferred to the pool and the cooler water is put back into the ground. The pool will remain open all over the year but it may be closed this winter due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The geothermal pool had been in development for quite some time before it finally opened this year. It is the largest lido in United Kingdom with a capacity of 50 people at a time. But the number has been restricted to 15 currently due to rules of social distancing.

It is open for both children and adults with tickets for the adults starting from £11.75. Children below the age of four will not require any entry ticket.

The triangular lido, Jubilee Pool, has been in use from 1935 and is the largest lido in the United Kingdom. The opening of the geothermal pool marks the end of a large regeneration project as a result of which Jubilee Pool got a new cafe and new changing facilities. The project cost £1.8 million, funded in part by a section of the local people. Plans are being made for the future to open up the pool for packages such as ‘geothermal and dine’ or ‘geothermal and fizz’ along with spa treatments.

The engineers behind the pool have informed that the system installed in the lido produces very low carbon heating and is therefore beneficial to the environment. It is being hailed as the flagship for geothermal energy.
