If cricket and football are too tame or mainstream for you, soon you will be able to indulge in the international contest of a unique sport. Post a successful run of the Paragliding Pre-World Cup, Mizoram is all set to host the Paragliding Accuracy World Cup in 2020. Held from February 10 to 16, 130 paragliders and 20 officials from all over the world are expected to participate in the event. The World Cup will take place in Serchhip, a town located 90 km away from Aizawl (the state capital).
According to news reports, the same was announced by the Mizoram Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte recently. According to the official, Mizoram will represent India in the competition. Alongside the World Cup, the state will also host a Grand Festival which will showcase the diversity and ethnicity of Mizoram. This, in turn, is expected to draw tourists to the state, from around the world.
The internationally renowned Paragliding Cup Association has already sent technical experts to scope out the town for the competition, said the minister. Serchhip is considered to be an ideal location, considering the factors of wind speed and topography of the area. Not to mention, the Pre-World Cup in 2018 was also held in the same location under the Federation Aeronautics Internationale. The same witnessed participation from 9 countries.
Additionally, the state will also host State Games for the third time post a break of 30 years. Over the course of five days (December 9 to 13, 2019), the competition is expected to see participation of 15,120 players from 140 MLA constituencies, as mentioned by Royte. The State Games consist of 32 sports, including 132 men’s events and 88 women’s events. Funds of INR 150 Lakh have been allocated to the games.
