Capturing our everyday routine in its most basic form, here are five instagrammers that we really like right now :

Karanjit Singh (@daguerreologue) counters fetishised portrayals of Tibetans and Sikhs with poignant film photographs. Striking colours are cut with ample breathing room, courtesy manicured police grounds, eclectic living rooms, and the inevitable melancholy of negative space. Singh’s imagery is multi-layered, dignified, yet soft.

Vijarayaj PS (@vijayarajps) calls himself a believer of instinct. The Chennai-based photographer has fashioned a quaint song of the south, using close crops and motion blurs to frame indigenous festivals, rituals and ways of life. Some photographs may be unsettling, such as the violent trance of oracles in Thrissur, but they’re eased by more pleasant sights of beaches, fluid stage performances, and lounging elephants.

Avani Rai’s handle (@avani.rai) is a bewildering showcase of documentary portraiture. Rai covers everything from Pulwama to architecture, anarchy to couture, with a powerfully empathetic visual fingerprint. There’s also a sprinkling of family photos. Given that her father is the celebrated Raghu Rai, we don’t hold it against her.

Nail artist by day, Naga food goddess by night. Ayhunle Lorin’s handle (@aleelorinfood) offers a colourful mishmash of home-style Northeastern food. The Kohima native shows off her tribal heritage with plates that are packed unapologetically to the rafters; see if you can spot local delicacies like beef pickle, yam stems, chayote squash and silkworms. Content, not form, is the star here.

Rajesh Singh (@rajesh4films) is known for his salt of the earth portrayals of coal miners, women farmers, and Behrupiya artists. However, it is series on religious festivals that stand out. He foregoes clichéd depictions of the Kumbh Mela to showcase the under-represented Kinnar Akhara; a group of transgender saints; and charming Eid celebrations in the NCR.
