Thick snow all around us looked intimidating. "We are trekking through this?" One of my friends asked the guide, who merely nodded with a slight smile as if it were a normal, everyday thing to do. In retrospect, it was a normal, everyday thing for him.

As the first glimpse of the snowy terrain touched our eye line through the grime-coated glass of the cable car, we knew we would be cold for days. For the next three days, we trekked through thick snow, skied and fell too many times, and discovered hidden treasures on our way up.

The first glimpse of the town from the cable car from Joshimath

The town as seen through the grime-coated glass of the cable car

The skiing area as people started to gather

Right before we all fell to our embarrassment

The sun resembling the moon as we winded down from skiing in a mild blizzard

The trek begins

The uphill climb through snow

The flags were the first thing we saw as we nearly reached the summit

A temple buried in snow

A closed-off temple buried in snow made us stop. In summers the snow clears and devotees gather here regularly
