Unknown and unexplored, lighthouses in India have an aura of mystery around them that is begging to be discovered and explored. With this spirit in mind, the Ministry of Shipping has decided to prettify 194 lighthouses in India, out of which 71 have been approved in the first phase. The rich maritime heritage along with the scenic surroundings is something that has the potential to turn into attractive and rich tourism destinations. Here are some of the approved lighthouses from that list.

Aguada, Goa

Gorgeous panoramic views of the ocean greet you, once you make the nail-biting climb to the top of this lighthouse.

Chandrabhaga, Odisha

The lighthouse overlooks the Konark Beach, whose waters are believed to have medicinal properties that can cure certain diseases.

Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

The steep steps lead up to a mesmerising view of the sea as well as the city of Mahabalipuram.

Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

The last point of the country provides the perfect spot to observe the meeting point of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.

With beautiful, dense coconut trees flanking the structure on either sides, this tall, imposing lighthouse overlooks the stunning turquoise waters of the sea on this little-known island.
