Galerie 88

For viewing works of contemporary modern artists, Galerie 88 is the best place to start your tour of Kolkata’s art scene. Displaying both Indian and International artists, Galerie 88 curates a brilliant collection of contemporary and modern art. Its curated artists include MF Hussain, Ganesh Pyne, and Paritosh Sen, among other names.

Genesis Art Gallery

One of the most prominent art galleries in the City of Joy, Genesis strives to promote the work of emerging artists more than veterans in the field. In their portfolio of artists, there are both Indian as well as international names in the world of contemporary art on display, like Sunil Das and Suhas Roy, among others. Recently they have started to explore more provocative and avant-garde artists’ which will appeal more to the art-admiring and curious younger crowd.

CIMA Gallery

This is the mecca for all art lovers in Kolkata. CIMA gallery has been there in the city for decades and organises shows and exhibitions throughout the year in collaboration with international museums and art institutions. Every October, the gallery hosts an annual Art Mela where you can meet artists and pick up pieces at discounted prices.

Aakar Prakar Gallery

Firstly, Aakar Prakar is a fitting name for an art gallery. Aakar Prakar, or “Shapes and Forms,” has an enviable collection of art across all mediums. You can find paintings, installations, sculptures and photographs. They also collaborate with art institutions and have shows running throughout the year.

Verandah Art Gallery

This quaint little boutique art gallery is as charming as the collection it displays. It showcases a mix of paintings, photographs and installations with works from a range of artists, including acclaimed photographer Gary Solway and artists Subrata Das and Jagannath Paul, among others.
