Seeking to be both a gateway to heaven and a dreamy stargazing observatory, these cabins are perhaps just what we needed right now

A South African design studio, Mimo Architects, have imagined the perfect nest for stargazing and immersing in nature for us in these uncertain times. They have come up with the idea of smiling cabins which kind of derives inspiration from our homebound reality during 2020, when many of just wished to disappear somewhere deep in the woods, away from it all.

The Johannesburg-based design studio has said that the cabins will sit on a square patch of ground in a secluded landscape where they can 'smile up at the sky'. Decked with large observatory glasses, a night full of stars will be your view as you go to bed (instead of screen hours).

The structure is to be made of concrete, wood and glass – alternatively, these could be stone, wood and straw. Sunken into the earth with a heavy base, the cabin will be exactly the right size. The charred exterior of the cabin will melt with the lush old forest surrounding it, and merge with nature.

The studio says the aim behind the project is simple. It’s to escape. It's for the dreamers who can stroll in the woods by the day, sit by the fire at night and feel the power of a starry night.
