A familiar scare is over the world again, with a new strain of the dreaded Coronavirus rearing its head in the UK, Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands. And despite the fresh lockdowns that have been announced in Australia and Britain, we have learned enough to not let Grinch 2.0 steal Christmas that easily. What: Bring Chicago’s much-prized holiday tradition to your screens with the Lookingglass Theatre Company’s superb reinvented adaptation of the beloved classic tale, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, by Hans Christian Andersen. Kitchen Zoo and Northern Stage, too, are updating The Emperor’s New Clothes, another Andersen story into an endearing Christmas story about two fashionista con artists.
When: The Steadfast Tin Soldier streams through December 27 and The Emperor’s New Clothes is available to watch till December 31
La Cenerentola
What: Gioachino Rossini’s classic opera based on the Cinderella story, directed by Peter Hall and recorded 15 years ago, is available to watch for free on the YouTube channel of the Glyndebourne opera house. Wondering why you should watch the Cinderella story all over again? Rossini’s version of the classic fairy tale does away with glibness and fantasy and peppers the plot with genuine emotion and moments of comedy.
When: The last stream is on Monday, January 4, 2021
Christmas at the Royal Albert Hall
What: Christmas at the century-and-a-half London concert hall is an affair grander than anywhere else. The events include a night of carol-singing with the illustrious Royal Choral Society, a performance of Handel’s Messiah, and performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.
When: The stream goes on till December 31
Midnight Mass at Westminster Abbey

What: Witness the historical Westminster Abbey’s Christmas Midnight Mass, including music by the abbey’s choir, a sermon and Holy Communion. The free livestream can be watched on the website. Prominent churches in India, too, have planned livestreams of their Christmas Midnight Mass.

LA County Holiday Celebration
What: Los Angeles residents swear by this popular Christmas show that has over six decades, become a bona fide yuletide tradition. The star attractions include performances by diverse groups and artists including Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles, the Latin-folk group Cuñao, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, the Pacifico Dance Company and Palmdale High School Chamber Singers and Sunday Night Singers. And BTW, the event won a Los Angeles Emmy this year.
