Departures
You could only dream of being as spontaneous and impulsive as the Departures duo. In their 2008 show Departures, Scott Wilson and Justin Lukach talk about exactly this, the spontaneity and importance of the journey than the attraction of the destination. The pilot takes off in Canada when the two high school friends along with cameraman Andre Dupuis set out to visit brighter, bigger places. What makes this show especially appealing and captivating are the stories that this trio weaves around the connections they’ve built throughout their journey. From attending a friend’s wedding in Jordan to visiting their friend in Tokyo, this show brings forth stuff that dreams are made of. Panning over 3 seasons and 42 episodes, watch this show not for the glamour but the stories. You can find the entire series on YouTube.
Around The World In 80 days With Michael Palin
We’ve read the book, we’ve seen the film but an unbelievable reality is always more welcome than predictable fiction. In this TV series, Michael Palin recreates and quite literally follows the footsteps of fictional character Phileas Fogg with his five person camera crew appropriately named Passpartout. Given the same deadline, Palin travels around the world without an aircraft and covers many countries including, India, Hong Kong, China, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia among others. Palin retraces Fogg’s journey by using all means of transport except flight, by foot, ships, hot air balloons and even husky dogs. The short 7 part series was then drafted in a book of the same name which recounts his adventures in much more detail. You can catch the series on Dailymotion.
