The clue is in part in the name. We get thermogenesis from the Greek words thermos and genesis, meaning heat and creation, respectively. In a simple sense, then, thermogenesis simply means the creation of heat.

Let’s begin with arguably the best of them, PhenQ . It’s a genuinely brilliant fat burner designed and manufactured by Wolfson Berg, one of the best supplement companies going. Their back catalogue includes such luminaries as the CrazyBulk range and NooCube – they’ve spent over a decade spearheading high quality supplements, often for very reasonable prices.

But what will PhenQ do for you?

Firstly, it’s a great thermogenic supplement. It will allow you to burn more energy than you otherwise would. In addition, it should also help with focus and mental clarity, energy levels, and mood, whilst evening out your appetite for fewer hunger pangs. Basically, all those side effects we saw above will come undone when you take it. Your calorie deficit will be able to get to work without you having to worry about any horrible side effects.

PhenQ achieves what it does by using one of the best ingredients lists I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing on a thermogenic fat burner.

This all begins with a wonderful ingredient called A-Lacey’s Reset. A-Lacey’s Reset is a trademarked formula designed to elicit quite a potent thermogenic reaction, enhancing your natural metabolism and allowing your body to burn through fat faster.

It’s a scientifically justified blend of alpha lipoic acid, cysteine, and magnesium. There is plenty of clinical data supporting the use of these three ingredients – they have been shown to reduce body fat levels and enhance overall weight loss. Trimtone is a funny one – it’s a genuinely brilliant supplement, but I have a bit of a beef with it. It’s marketed solely to women (some similar supplements are marketed solely to men). This kind of targeting is silly and fairly erroneous. There is nothing in Trimtone’s formula that makes it better for women than men, just as there is nothing in some of the ‘men’s only’ products that make them better for men than women.

Although this is a list of best fat burners for women, there really isn’t much of a difference in how they work between the sexes. Anyone will benefit from them, and I often include Trimtone in similar lists either untargeted or aimed at men’s fat burners.

It’s a shame, because Trimtone, made by Health Nutrition Limited, a UK-registered manufacturer with a reputation for the highest quality, is fantastic. It does everything you would want of a top fat burner, no matter your sex. It is a potent thermogenic supplement that can also suppress your appetite, give you plenty of energy, optimize your fat burning potential, and generally undo many of the unpleasant side effects caused by running a calorie deficit.

This all shows in its ingredients list, which is nearly as good as PhenQ’s in many ways (and better in a couple!) It’s a bit of a lean formula, which is a shame, but the ingredients it does use are perfect. They should give you all the benefits you want.

This begins with glucomannan, whose exclusion in PhenQ’s formula is one of the only reasons this isn’t a one-supplement list. It’s just about the best fibre going for those looking to lose weight. Glucomannan is able to swell to up to fifty times its starting size in the gut. This means that it will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Dietary fibre is often in short supply when you’re following a restricted eating plan. This is a problem, as fibre is crucial to many aspects of your health, including digestive health, blood pressure and blood glucose levels, cholesterol balance, gut flora, and plenty more. Glucomannan more than makes up for fiber’s absence in your diet, giving you benefits across the board.

I like to see it as often as possible in diet aids like Trimtone.

You get 120 mg per serving. This is hardly that much – most others give plenty more – but it’s a welcome boost and may make Trimtone a good bet for those looking to keep caffeine levels low.

Chlorogenic acid may lead to reduced body fat absorption whilst also lowering insulin levels, and thus helping to flatten out hunger pangs. Finally, you get a good dose of aframomum melegueta, or grains of paradise, with Trimtone. Grains of paradise is a form of ginger that elicits a decent amount of added thermogenesis. Forget the marketing – I would recommend Trimtone to anyone.

Phen24

Phen24 is Wolfson Brands’ second item on this list. If I have one problem with PhenQ, which I do, it’s that it doesn’t contain any good quality fibre. I would like to see some glucomannan in there, or something at least nearly equivalent.

They sort of plug this gap with Phen24, one of the smartest supplements that money can buy.

Everything else on this list looks a bit like a one-trick pony compared to Phen24. Now, that’s obviously unfair to say – everything on this list works multiple avenues of attack to bring you a plethora of benefits. However, it’s all sort of one-dimensional. You take your supplement, possibly at regular intervals, and reap the same rewards day after day.

Phen24 mixes things up a bit. You actually get two very different, very distinct supplements in one. Together, these give you complete, 24-hour coverage, allowing you to make the most of their separate formulas around the clock.

It begins with a daytime pill, which looks much like any other supplement on this list. It owes a lot of its DNA to PhenQ (though it isn’t quite as good). You get plenty of high-quality thermogenic fat burners included in it, plus lots of added energy and everything your metabolism needs to keep ticking over on full power.

The ingredients included are all stimulants and similar. The energy and thermogenesis largely come from caffeine and guarana (which gives a similar effect to caffeine, just at a bit of a slower burn), though there are some good micronutrients in there to help with this. Specifically, you get the minerals zinc, copper, and iodine, which all play key roles in supporting balanced, optimized energy levels.

The night time supplement switches gears a little. It dispenses with the energy, of course, which will allow you to maintain far more regular, healthier sleep patterns. There are no stimulants at all in it. Instead, this side of Phen24 looks to maintain a healthy metabolic rate during the night, allowing for greater recovery and repair, whilst suppressing your appetite, meaning no midnight cravings (which can get to all of us as we follow calorie deficits). 

This is where the glucomannan comes into play. As we have seen in the Trimtone formula, it’s particularly good at sating your appetite, swelling up to fifty times its original size. Also as we have already seen, it represents a great addition to any weight loss diet, giving your body the fibre it needs to stay healthy even as your food intake is restricted.

It isn’t just glucomannan playing its part here, however. You get several added ingredients that have been closely tied to metabolic health, allowing your body to work optimally as you sleep. These include the likes of plyridoxine HDL, thiamine, chromium, and ascorbic acid.

Everything is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

It’s an incredibly clever way to go about supporting your weight loss efforts, keeping you right every second of the day with exactly what you need for maximum efficiency. 

Hunter Burn

We come to a similar gripe here as I have with Trimtone. Hunter Burn is an incredibly good product that will give you plenty of energy whilst eliciting a great deal of extra thermogenesis. I would recommend it to anyone looking for the benefits of a good fat burner for women.

It is simply erroneously marketed, again. It is quite strongly marketed at a very specific type of person – aggressive, adrenaline fueled, testosterone mad high-octane gym goers. It’s in the name – both ‘hunter’ and ‘burn’ elicit this kind of imagery. Fair enough. Every supplement has to have its image, its brand. I’m just worried that it will put some people off.

And it really shouldn’t. Hunter Burn is a perfect supplement for all people wanting to live an active lifestyle whilst shedding a few extra pounds of body fat. You don’t have to go at it 110% to make it work. Simply getting a solid workout in whilst cutting your calories will suffice.

Don’t get me wrong, their marketing isn’t completely off base. The types of people it is aimed at will greatly benefit from taking Hunter Burn. I have that side to me, and I have enjoyed taking Hunter Burn in the past. Just don’t let it put you off if that’s not you.

You would also expect it to be packed to the gills with stimulants. There are some included, of course – you get a lot of matcha green tea, which will give you some caffeine. However, Hunter Burn’s main benefits seem to come from appetite suppression.

You get this appetite suppression largely from glucomannan, which is of course fantastic. It will provide a great boost to your dietary fibre intake whilst keeping hunger pangs at bay, keeping you feeling fuller for longer.

This is nicely backed up by white kidney bean extract, which is a very clever extra touch. White kidney bean extract will change up the way in which your body processes – or, rather, absorbs – carbs. This is a big deal in any weight loss program. When we overeat, it tends to be carbohydrates we go mad on – think of starchy food and those high in sugar which are easy to consume in volume, adding ever more extra calories.

White kidney bean extract is thought to delay complex carbs from being broken down into simpler sugars, with some promising clinical data seeming to support the theory. This means that your blood sugar levels will be lower and more even, and that you will feel fuller for longer. It’s a fantastic partner for that glucomannan.

Hunter Burn also gives you a good deal of extra thermogenesis – it is a fat burner, after all. You get this mainly from cayenne pepper, one of the best thermogenic ingredients going. Cayenne pepper is rich in capsicum, whose thermogenic credentials are very well-studied and pretty much without equal. It is also thought to work in a similar way to piperine, improving the other ingredients’ bioavailability.

This is aided by the matcha green tea mentioned above. There is plenty of caffeine in the green tea, giving you a small energy kick alongside some added thermogenesis. There are also plenty of antioxidants in matcha green tea, which are incredibly healthy above and beyond what you’re looking for from a fat burner.

The next couple of ingredients make the branding make a little more sense, however. Though the energy kick may not be the most profound, there is plenty in Hunter Burn to aid an athletic lifestyle.

Most of this comes from its inclusion of l-theanine, an amino acid with a few different uses. It shows promise for its ability to inhibit fat storage, which is clearly a very good thing in a weight loss supplement. It has also been shown to help you in maintaining your muscle mass even as you enter a calorie deficit, which isn’t always easy – your body will otherwise typically begin to metabolize muscle mass for energy.

It is therefore perfect for anybody looking to build a lean physique with minimal muscle wastage.

You also get a good dose of vitamin D3 with Hunter Burn. This will help to keep your immune system in good order, which is important. A lot of active types find their immune systems overtaxed, especially during a calorie deficit, leaving them open to infection. It is also known for its ability to keep your metabolism working optimally, which will go a long way to supporting the l-theanine in maintaining your muscle mass.

Hunter Burn is completely natural, completely vegan, and incredibly high quality. It’s perfect for those pushing themselves to the limit. It’s also perfect for anybody looking for a bit of a diet aid as they simply slim down whilst putting in a little time at the gym.

Everything else on this list is a traditional thermogenic fat burner that will work well when paired with any calorie deficient diet. Simply cut down your calorie intake by 500-1000 per day, take them, and watch the results come in.

Keto Charge is a little different. It isn’t a traditional fat burner. It also needs a very specific diet plan for it to be any use – you need to be strictly adhering to a ketogenic diet. Without this kind of diet plan, Keto Charge is as useless as a thermogenic fat burner is without a calorie deficit.

But with it in place, Keto Charge is terrific. It will help your ketogenic diet in various ways, which in turn should lead to a great deal of weight loss.

Ketosis is a metabolic state. It occurs when your body is almost starved of carbohydrates. In fact, if you follow a ketogenic diet, you will typically need to take in fewer than 50 g of carbohydrates per day, or roughly 25% of what most diets allow. This is pretty brutal. However, it stops the body from using glycogen, or stored sugar, for energy.

Rather, you will begin to use ketones for energy. These are molecules made from fat – your body will turn its dietary and stored fat into them to function, allowing you to burn through a lot of body fat in the process.

It’s not this simple, though. Or, rather, it’s not easy. There are several side effects associated with ketosis that can break even the best of us. 

Firstly, you will want carbs. Your body will be crying out for them. Most cultures are geared towards carb use, adding to the temptation. It can be incredibly difficult staying away from them. It is meant to boost thermogenesis, give you a good energy kick, whilst bringing down your hunger levels and diminishing your ability to create new fat, all in conjunction with a good quality calorie deficit.

It was originally designed for aesthetics, with physique competitors in mind. We’re talking about bodybuilders and bikini models. However, just like a lot of the other supplements I’ve listed today (Trimtone, Hunter Burn), it’s suitable for a far broader clientele. Don’t pay too much attention to branding – I’ve never been a physique competitor (not even close!) and I’ve used it to great effect before.
