The humble soap is often overlooked, but it deserves more attention! It's a staple in keeping us clean and fresh, and there's more to consider than just grabbing a bar from the store. Men are notorious for not paying much attention to their beauty products, but a good soap is a perfect place to start - your skin will thank you for it!

Many commercially-available soaps contain harmful chemicals that can dry out, irritate, and even accelerate the aging of the skin. Fortunately, there is a wide variety of soaps available to address specific skin concerns, including dry, sensitive, oily, and acne-prone skin. In terms of the best soaps for men, exfoliating is a common theme, as men's skin tends to be coarser and requires a little extra effort to soften.

Ethique Unscented Charcoal, Kaolin, & Oatmeal Soap Bar

Born in New Zealand, Ethique is fighting the battle against plastic by supplying its products in compostable packaging. Their Unscented Charcoal, Kaolin, & Oatmeal Soap Bar is made with sustainably-sourced ingredients and is suitable for all skin types. It works particularly well on combination skin as the vegan formula includes olive and coconut oil to keep your skin moisturized and fresh.

It brings a wee bit of abrasion to scrub off that yucky dead skin, but with this in mind, it should be applied gently or using a washcloth. It's unscented, so great if you're not one for strong smells. Charcoal works as an anti-inflammatory and will help to absorb excess oil, and kaolin is a clay that will help with acne and dry skin. So it's an all-around good bar of soap if we do say so ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Is Better, Soap Bar or Body Wash?

It really all depends on your skin type, lifestyle, and personal preference. If you’ve been blessed with normal, completely unbothered skin, the world is your oyster! If you’re a fraction dry, you may like to use a body wash, and a bar of soap may work better for oily skin types. Of course, it’s always good to keep your skin on edge – as it gets used to products, they can become less effective, so you may want to consider mixing it up a bit anyway.

What Skin Type Is Bar Soap Best For?

A men’s bar of soap is best used on most skin types and is especially good for a more intensive clean – they work better at removing dead skin. You may have noticed that many soap bars for men contain exfoliating properties, which is due to men’s skin generally being rougher than their female counterparts – if you have particularly irritated skin or don’t need exfoliation, you may want to consider a body wash, or a gender-neutral soap that’s a little less harsh.

Try to avoid cheap supermarket brands as they may strip the skin of much-needed oils and aren’t always made with as much care as others. If your skin sits somewhere in the normal or combination range, you may want to consider alternating, using a more intensive bar of soap a couple of times a week for a deep clean.

What Skin Type Is Body Wash Best For?

Dry or sensitive skin? Don't want to strip out those natural oils? If so, body wash is probably better for you. Body wash is made with more water than soap (so, not as environmentally friendly, sorry!), and it is much easier to pack in hydrating properties such as vitamin E, shea butter, aloe vera, glycerine, and a variety of oils.

Body wash is typically less stripping than your average bar of soap. Still, no matter how dry or sensitive your skin is, we would recommend exfoliating your skin once a week or so – whether that's with a bar of soap or an exfoliating body wash is totally up to personal preference. You could also consider using a loofah with your body wash – more of a gentle, natural exfoliant.
