West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee today seized the mobile phone of a WBCS officer who was caught taking photos during the debate on demand for budgetary grants for the department of women development and social welfare.

The officer, who was posted in the secretariat of Sashi Panja's ministry, was clicking photos which immediately attracted the attention of the members, particularly the Left and the Congress.

The members started shouting and informed the Speaker that he was taking their photos.

The Speaker immediately asked the assembly security personnel to confiscate his mobile phone and take him out of the House.

After the day's proceedings were over, the Speaker summoned the officer inside the House and asked if  he had anything to say.

The officer said he was unaware of the rules and customs of the house and tendered an apology. The mobile was then returned with the photos deleted.

A similar incident took place in 2010 when the then DGP Bhupinder Singh was reprimanded and fined by Speaker H A Halim for taking photos on his mobile phone inside the assembly.
