Vir Sanghvi, Advisory Editorial Director of Hindustan Times was given the first Lokmanya Tilak award for excellence in Journalism at a function held here.
Deepak Tilak, great grandson of the Lokmanya and trustee editor of daily <i>Kesari</i> gave away the award to Sanghvi last night on the occasion that also marked the newspaper's 128th anniversary.
The award carries a citation and a cash reward of Rs one lakh.
The noted journalist, during the ceremony, recalled the inspiring role played by the Lokmanya in the country's freedom struggle that served as beacon to the masses, making them aware of their cultural and national identity.
He observed that Journalism should not be viewed just as a money making business and should be practised with social commitment.
