New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) After his last month's unceremonious exit from Amul, Verghese Kurien, father of India's dairy movement, was today appointed Chancellor of the University of Allahabad.

The 84 year-old Kurien, who is hailed as the architect of the country's white revolution, will be the first Chancellor of the varsity after it was recently accorded a Central University status.

His appointment, which takes place with immediate effect, will have a five year tenure as Chancellor, official release said.

Kurien, who pioneered the milk revolution in the country from Anand district, had resigned as Chairman of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which produces and markets the Amul products, pre-empting a move by the board members to oust him.

Kurien had said yesterday at a function of Indian Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) at Anand that he has "no regrets" in life.

"It has been an exciting, eventful and rewarding experience," he said while commenting about his personal and professional life at Anand which has been his home for the last 60 years.

Kurien, on March 20, had relinquished the chairmanship of NDDB to his former protege Amrita Patel in 1990s and is currently facing stiff opposition as the chairman of IRMA.
