Vajpayee Most Deserving for Bharat Ratna: Lord Swraj Paul

Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul today hailed the conferment of Bharat Ratna on Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying he richly deserved it.

"Though it is overdue, Atal Bihari Vajpayee richly deserved Bharat Ratna. He was most successful in heading a coalition government," Lord Paul said.

President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Bhrat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on Vajpayee at his residence on 6 Krishna Menon Marg in New Delhi today.

Vajpayee was the first non-Congress leader to serve India as Prime Minister for a full five year term from 1999 to 2004.

Vajpayee is the seventh prime minister to receive the award after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Gulzarilal Nanda.
