Trial begins in Haren Pandya murder case
Ahmedabad, Oct 8 (PTI) Trial in assassination of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya began today with a special POTA court recording evidence of one witness in the case.

The witness examined was the person who had taken Pandya to hospital and informed the police after he saw the BJP leader seriously wounded lying in the car.

However, media has been barred from publishing the name of the witness as also the proceedings of trial, according to CBI's counsel J M Panchal.

Pandya was gunned down on February 26 last year outside Law Garden locality where he had gone for his morning walk.

CBI, which was handed over the investigations into the case on the same day, has arrested 19 persons that includes sharpshooter Mohammed Asghar Ali and his accomplices from Hyderabad and some natives of Ahmedabad in various batches.

The alleged mastermind behind the murder Mufti Sufiyan Patangia, a resident of Dariapur area of the city, is at large and, according to CBI sources, he is still in Yemen.

On June two, CBI slapped POTA in the Haren Pandya murder case on the grounds that " investigations have revealed a "major conspiracy" that was hatched to strike terror in the minds of a particular section of people in Gujarat by using firearms causing death and injury to persons in retaliation to killing of members of Muslim community in the post-Godhra communal riots in Ahmedabad.

According to CBI sources, the conspiracy to kill Pandya was hatched in the old Juma Masjid here.
