T.N. Haokip Appointed New Manipur PCC President

Seeking to put the Congress house in order in dissidence hit Manipur in the wake of losing Arunachal Pradesh and facing Uttarakhand crisis, party chief Sonia Gandhi today replaced PCC Chief Gaikhangam by T N Haokip.

Haokip, a former Minister was brought in with immediate effect to quell the dissidence with some 25 Congress dissidents seeking the removal of Gaikhangam as PCC Chief. He is also State's deputy chief minister.

After losing Arunachal Pradesh to intra-party rift, the Congress was hit by dissidence in Manipur where the rift has pushed the Congress-led government of Okram Ibobi Singh into a crisis. About 25 rebel leaders had hinted at toppling the government and crossing over to the BJP if the PCC chief was not replaced.

Gandhi had recently urged the rebels not to "hurt" the party ahead of the Assembly elections next year and had assured them early this month that their demands for a Cabinet reshuffle and sacking some Ministers would be considered.

The Congress President's action in Manipur comes a couple of days after the party was shocked by the imposition of President's rule in party ruled Uttarakhand where nine MLAs had turned rebels.

Gandhi's pro-active approach came in the backdrop of the party recently losing northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh after open revolt against the then Chief Minister Nabam Tuki.

The dissidents in Arunachal had claimed that they had made several attempts to meet Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi before coming out in open revolt as they showed no interest in meeting them. Then they toppled Tuki government with the support of some BJP MLAs.
