A privately-chartered Russian cargo plane today crashed into the Bay of Bengal killing three of the four Ukrainians crew memebers, including the pilot.

The aircraft carrying shrimp fry from Cox Bazar to western Jessore district, crashed into the sea around half a kilometer off the shoreline soon after it took off at 9.40 AM, civil aviation officials said.

"Before the crash the pilot sent us a message saying one of the two engines of the plane went out of order... We prepared the airport for its emergency landing but the aircraft could not make its way back here," airport's manager Sadhan Kumar said.

An official of the private True Aviation cargo service which hired the aircraft for shrimp fry transportation said all the four onboard were Ukrainians while fishermen near the shoreline rescued the two of them and rushed them to a nearby hospital.

Of them, he said, flight engineer of the aircraft Kulisn Andriy was declared dead while flight navigator Vlodymyr Kultanov was shifted to northeastern port city of Chittagong for better treatment as his wounds appeared critical.

Air force, navy, coastguard and fire service rescuers joined by fishermen in the sea later retrieved bodies of pilot Murad Gafarov and co-pilot Ivan Patrov found inside the AN-26 transport aircraft in the afternoon.

Fire Service officials said the rescue campaign was delayed as the low tide caught the plane drifting it three kilometres from the crash site.
