Around 512 people have lost their lives to 93 air crashes this year, the worst being the Colombian plane crash that killed as many as 77 people, including a Brazilian football team on board. Be it due to mechanical failure or bad weather conditions or loss of control, air tragedies leave an indelible scar on the kin of those who bid their loved ones a farewell, never expecting it to be the final one. Here is a list of the worst ten air crashes that the world has witnessed in the last two years with respect to the number of casualties. With the unfortunate crash of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH-17, and Flight 370 mysteriously going missing, the year 2014 saw the maximum number of fatalities due to air accidents with the net death toll being 1328.  

2016

7 December 2016, Pakistan International Airlines flight PK661, bound for Islamabad-Benazir Bhutto Airport, crashed into a mountain near Havelian, in northern Pakistan. The 42 passengers and 5 crew members on board died. While cruising south of Abbottabad, the left engine failed, when the pilots declared an emergency. Soon after, the aircraft disintegrated.

28 November 2016, The La Mia Airlines flight was scheduled to fly from Bolivia to Medellin in Colombia. It crashed into a mountainous terrain near its destination on its way to Medellin's airport. On board were members of the Brazilian Chapecoense Football Club. The team was going to play the first of a two- game Copa Sudamericana 2016 final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin. Atletico Nacional who had been due to face the Chapecoense, asked for it to be awarded to their opponents as a tribute to those who died.

On 19 March 2016, a Fly Dubai plane crashed during an attempted landing in Russia, killing 62. In a statement published on twitter, the Dubai media office said 44 of the passengers were Russians, eight were Ukrainians, two were Indians and one was from Uzbekistan.

On 24 February 2016, Rescue teams in Nepal had found the wreckage of a small passenger plane that had gone missing in a remote mountainous area with 23 people on board.

 

2015

On 31 October 2015, a Russian operated Airbus crashed over the central Sinai desert killing all the 224 on board. This was the deadliest air disaster of 2015.

On 30 June 2015, a Lockheed KC-130B Hercules belonging to the Indonesian Air Force with 12 crew and 109 passengers on board, crashed near a residential neighbourhood shortly after taking off. All aboard were killed, along with 22 people on the ground.

On 24 March 2015, a Germanwings Airbus A-320 airliner crashed into the French Alps, on a flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, killing all 148 people on board.

2014

December 28, 2014, an Air Asia flight from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore crashed into the Java Sea.The pilot radioed for permission to divert due to bad weather but no mayday alert was issued. There were 162 passengers and crew on board. Two days after the crash, debris from the aircraft and human remains were found floating in the Java Sea. Wreckage on the sea floor was located on January 3, 2015. The recovery option was ceased on March 2016, after 106 of the 162 bodies were found.

On 17 July 2014, Malaysian Airlines flight MH-17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed near eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board which included 80 children. After a 15-month long investigation by the Dutch Safety Board (DSB), it was found that the plane was hit by a Russian-made Buk missile. Pro-Russian rebels were widely accused of shooting the plane down using the surface-to-air missile.

On 8 March 2014, a Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 suddenly vanished from the radar while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia, to Beijing Capital International Airport in China. The Boeing B777-200 was carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations.
