In a joint letter to the President, JD-U leader H N Nanje Gowda and BJP's Pramila Nesargi said that the Congress President married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 and applied and obtained Indian citizenship in 1984.
"Sonia Gandhi is a Roman Catholic who also owes adherence and allegiance to the Vatican City, which is a foreign State recognised under international law", they said.
They alleged that Sonia Gandhi made an application under Rule 4 of the Citizenship Rules in Form II, and at the time of application for registration for Indian citizenship under Form II of the Citizenship Rules, 1956, she had not renounced the citizenship of Italy in accordance with the law relating to renunciation of citizenship in Italy.
Claiming that Gandhi has not renounced her citizenship in accordance with the laws in Italy, they said a person born in Italy continues to be an Italian citizen for life and there has been no proper/legal renunciation of Italian citizenship in accordance with the law contemplated both in Italian and Indian law.
"Though Sonia Gandhi had obtained Indian citizenship, the fact remains that she still continues to owe adherence and allegiance to Italy, as an Italian citizen for life", the letter said.
