New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) Under attack for repeatedly referring to the Prime Minister's religion in the wake of Nanavati Commission's report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, BJP today said it referred to him as 'Sardar' as it was an honorific title.

"Sardar is an honorific title. The Sikhs like to be called so", party spokesperson Sushma Swaraj told reporters here.

She was responding to a question as to why BJP leaders had suddenly started referring to the Prime Minister as 'Sardar Manmohan Singh' and not 'Mr Manmohan Singh' as they used to do earlier.

BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman V K Malhotra had earlier said while the riots had taken place when Giani Zail Singh was the President of India, the cabinet headed by "Sardar Manmohan Singh" approved the Action Taken Report on the Nanavati Commission's findings.
