AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi today paid homage to Bhupen Hazarika at his Nizarapar residence.

Gandhi, on way from Dimapur, made a brief stopover and spent about 20 minutes with Hazarika's family and garlanded his portrait.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita were also present.

Gandhi spoke to Hazarika's son, Tez and the long-time partner of the cultural icon, Kalpana Lajmi.

He then drove to the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport without speaking to reporters.

Tez said that the AICC leader wanted to know about the future plans to preserve the memory of the late singer.

"We share a common bond as both of us were educated in US and he asked about our days in that country," Tez, who performed the last rites of his father, said.
