Tamil writer P Manickavasagam alias Poomani, whose novel set in late 19th century has been chosen as the best Tamil novel by the Sahitya Akademi for 2014, today said he was very happy to receive the honour.

His novel Angyadi is set in late 19th century Tamil Nadu. It is based on extensive research and revolves around a common man's travails arising out of a mix of caste, religion and politics.

"I am very happy. This is the seven award for my novel Angyadi. Six other bodies including Tamil perayam had earlier chosen this novel for their awards," Poomani told PTI over phone from Kovilpatti in southern Tamil Nadu.

Poomani is a retired State government official and is deeply interested in creative writing from his young age.

The novel was published in 2012 by Kriya Publications.
