Passage of Lokayukta Bill a Historic Step: BJP
Terming the passing of Lokayukta Bill in the Uttarakhand Assembly as a "historic step", the BJP today said the move would bring more transparency and accountability in public life.

"The passage of a stronger Lokayukta Bill to check the menace of corruption in the Assembly is a historic step." state BJP chief Bishan Singh Chufal told reporters here.

"The step will bring more transparency and accountability in public life," he said a day after the Legislative Assembly passed the Uttararakhand Lokayukta Bill, 2011, unanimously.

The party would organise functions to felicitate the state government led by B C Khanduri for the passage of a tough and stronger anti-corruption bill, Chufal said.

Soon after he was sworn-in as Chief Minister, Khanduri had vowed to set up a strong Lokayukta within two months.

While the lower judiciary will be covered under the Lokayukta, judges of the Uttarakhand High Court will not be under the purview of the anti-corruption ombudsman which is a mixture of the Lokpal draft of Anna Hazare and others.

Former Chief Ministers, former ministers and retired officers will also be under the purview of the Lokayukta.

Chufal said no scam took place during the BJP rule in the state.

When his attention was drawn to the CAG report, which has rapped the state government for irregularities in the conduct of Mahakumbh mela at Haridwar last year, he said "there was no mention of embezzlement in the report".

"The report merely states the money meant for Kumbh mela was spent for other heads and in places outside the Kumbh area," Chufal said.
