Part of Daman bridge collapses, no casualities
Ahmedabad, Aug 3 (PTI) Barely a few months after it was inaugurated, a portion of the re-constructed bridge connecting Moti Daman and Nani Daman collapsed today following heavy rains and floods that ravaged the Union Territory in south Gujarat. However, there were no casualities.

The bridge, which had collapsed last year claiming lives of 28 school children, was rebuilt at a cost of about Rs nine crore and inaugurated recently, Daman police told PTI.

"The slab of about 50 feet joining the new bridge to the old one has caved in. But there have been no casualties as it was closed for vehicular and pedestrian traffic since yesterday after it developed cracks," police said.

Officials attribute this damage to the heavy flooding caused by release of about 15 lakh cusec water from Madhuvan dam on river Damanganga, about 40 kms from Daman.

"Entire Daman has been marooned and we are taking the help of coast guard to evacuate the people to safety," police said, adding it cannot be immediately ascertained how many people have been shifted.

Daman has also requested Gujarat government to send State Reserve Police Force to help in rescue operations to which the latter has agreed in principle.
