Nuclear mishaps in Chernobyl and Japan have "scared" people, but if due care is taken, there will be no such accidents, New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah today said against the backdrop of protests against new atomic projects in some parts of the country.

"After Chernobyl and Japan, people got scared. They are still scared. But if due care is taken, I hope that no more disasters will take place," the minister said at a function here.

He was stressing the need for developing all types of clean energy sources to meet the power requirements in the country.

In the recent past, there have been large scale protests at various proposed nuclear reactor sites, including Jaitapur in Maharashtra and Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu.

The protests have become more profound after Fukushima disaster in Japan with concerns being raised about the safety of nuclear plants.
