Thiruvananthapuram,Oct 11 (PTI) The LDF government is attempting to divert public attention from the Merchiston land deal, allegedly involving the Forests Minister Binoy Viswam, by forming a new squad for illegal evictions in Munnar, Kerala PCC spokesman M M Hassan said today.

Addressing reporters here, Hassan said after "packing off" K Suresh Kumar, the first person who headed the eviction squad who was the "confidant" of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, V Gopala Menon was deputed and was later unceremoniously dismissed from the job.

K M Ramanandan, the new person appointed in charge of the Munnar evictions, had been earlier found to have made lapses in the utilisation of tsunami funds, Hassan alleged.

He also sought to know from the government why it had formed a squad after declaring valid the `pattayams' of party offices of CPI-M and CPI in Idukki which allegedly held illegal title deeds.

While "protecting" Forests Minister Binoy Viswam, facing charges in connection with the Merchiston land deal, the LDF government was trying to "make eyewash" with the new operation at Munnar, Hassan said.
