Meghalaya minister charged with embezzlement of funds resigns
Shillong, May 15 (PTI) Charged with embezzlement of central funds in the Garo hills, the Meghalaya Community and Rural Development (CRD) Minister, Beckstar K Sangma, has resigned from the D D Lapang government.

Sangma, an MLA from Ronchugiri assembly constituency in the Garo hills also held the portfolios of Non-conventional sources of Energy, Mass and Elementary Education, Stamps and Reorganisation besides CRD and tendered his resignation to the Chief Minister yesterday.

Official sources said today that Sangma, who was inducted into the Lapang cabinet on December 8 last year, had to resign as he and some Block Development Officers were allegedly involved in embezzlement of Rs 50 lakh meant for Rural Innovative housing project in two Garo Hills blocks.

The misuse of funds came to light after the NCP MP and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma, as Chairman of Central Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, launched a "campaign to unearth corruption". He also submitted a memorandum to the government giving the details of his findings.

Raj Bhawan sources said that Sangma's resignation was accepted and another MLA from Garo Hills Zenith Sangma, also the state Youth Congress president, was being inducted into the cabinet today.

Beckstar Sangma's resignation followed after opposition NCP and BJP, besides Garo Students Union, demanded his ouster from the government on the issue.

The Congress also felt that his continuation in the government would tarnish the image of the Lapang government in the Garo hills.
