Maharashtra Pussyfoots on Mistry Book Withdrawal
Treading cautiously over Mumbai University withdrawing Rohinton Mistry's book from syllabus for its certain anti- Shiv Sena remarks, Maharashtra Government assured to look into the matter.

"I am talking in general that historical facts cannot be changed. If any writing is based on fact, we cannot change it. However, I will take information on the issue," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan today said.

Accepting that such controversies make things difficult and the syllabus cannot be changed every time, Chavan said he also needs to understand the University's move dropping the novel, Such a Long Journey from the syllabus of BA degree course.

"I will take information from the University Vice Chancellor as to why they took the decision," he said.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope said that the Government cannot intervene the matter.

"The decision to recall the book was the University's prerogative. We can only check if the procedure followed by the University was correct. It is also important to find out how it was introduced in the curriculum," Tope said.

Following orders by its leader Aditya, grandson of Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena, party's students wing had burnt copies of the novel last month and petitioned the University's Vice Chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar to drop it from the syllabus for its anti-Sena remarks.

Bowing to the demand, the University immediately withdrew the book from the syllabus and issued notices to all colleges regarding the same.
