Kerala Guv Hails Karunakarn As a Visionary

Kerala Governor R S Gavai, Chief Minister V S Achutanandan and his cabinet colleagues condoled the death of veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister K Karunakaran and described him as a visionary.

In his condolence message, Gavai said he had lost a long-term associate through the death of K Karunakran. An illustrious freedom fighter, he was one of the senior most leaders of Indian National Congress, he said.

"Active to the aspiration of the people, his tenure as Chief Minister of Kerala was marked by many reforms of far reaching impact. His contributions to the country in general and the state in particular will long be remembered," the Governor said.

Chief Minister V S Achutanandan said Karunakaran was one of the most popular political leaders and administrators the state had ever seen. "Karunakaran's ability to win the hearts of people was unique. His tactical politics had become part of political history of the state," he said.

Achutanandan said Karunakaran had played a remarkable role for the development of the state and his contributions to the growth of the Congress party in the state was significant.

Karunakarn's death would create a void in national as well as Kerala politics, Union minister Mullappaly Ramachandran said.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said Karunakran's contributions to state and national politics would be remembered for ever.

Karunakaran was a leader who loved and stood by party workers, state opposition leader Oommen Chandy said.

Chandy, former chief minister of the state,also described Karunakaran as the 'Bhishmacharya' of Kerala politics and an able administrator. His contributions to Congress party in Kerala would be remembered for ever.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Ramesh Chennithala, while expressing sorrow over the death of the leader, said with Karunakaran's demise, a political era had ended in Kerala.

Kerala Catholic Bishop Congress (KCBC) said Karunakaran's contributions to safeguard secularism were remarkable.

Leaders of various political parties including National Congress Party (NCP), Socialist Janata (Democratic) Party President M P Veerendra Kumar were among those expressed condolence over the death of the leader.
