Karan Thapar Chosen for IPI-India Award for Journalism

Television interviewer Karan Thapar has been chosen for the IPI-India Award for Excellence in Journalism for 2013.

The jury, comprising eminent editors and publishers, unanimously chose Thapar for his sharp interviews with decision-makers from different fields, focusing on contemporary issues and on a range of subjects of public importance during the year 2012 on the Devil's Advocate programme on CNN IBN news channel, a statement from India Chapter of International Press Institute said.

Former Chief Justice of India, Justice A S Anand headed the jury while the other members included Chairman of IPI-India and Director of 'The Hindu' N Ravi, M K Razdan, Editor-in-Chief of Press Trust of India, T N Ninan, Chairman and Chief Editor of Business Standard, and Riyad Mathew, Senior Assistant Editor of Malayala Manorama.

The award, comprising a cash prize of Rs two lakh, a trophy and a citation, would be presented at a function here in next month.

IPI India had instituted the annual award in 2003 to recognise and honour the best work done by an Indian media organisation or journalist working in print, radio, television and Internet mediums, in furtherance of public interest, including safeguarding of freedom of the press and other freedoms such as human rights.

The IPI-India is an active forum of editors, publishers and senior executives of newspapers, magazines and news agencies, all of whom are members of the International Press Institute, which formed 60 years ago in New York by a group of editors from 15 countries.

Last year, The Tribune newspaper won the award for their in-depth series on the loot of Punjab's public transport by powerful politicians and bureaucrats.
