Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, who rejoined BJP yesterday, was today appointed as its national vice president, marking his rehabilitation in the party.

BJP President Rajnath Singh announced the appointment of Kalyan Singh as party's vice president with immediate effect.

The party president had welcomed the former UP CM back in the party at the Lucknow rally addressed by Narendra Modi and announced that an important responsibility would be given tohim in the BJP soon.

Kalyan Singh was the Chief Minister when the Babri mosque was demolished in 1992. He was an MP from Etah constituency and has already resigned from the Lok Sabha.

Singh could not join BJP earlier owing to the fear of disqualification in Parliament as the outfit Jankranti Party, which he had formed after quitting BJP during 2009 Lok Sabha polls, merged with the BJP in January 2013.

At the time of merger, his party was headed by his son Rajbir Singh.
