India has banned import of toys from China, in a step to provide protection to the domestic manufacturers against cheap competition from the neighbouring country.

The ban, notified by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, will remain valid for six months.

The Government, which gave no reason for slapping the prohibition, was concerned over a rise in import of toys.

Besides, concern was also raised over the safety of children playing with the Chinese toys.

Import of milk and milk products, besides chocolates, from China has already been banned. The ban on import of milk items from the neighbouring country was because of the presence of melamine, a deadly chemical found in them.
