A young woman has accused two Army personnel of "abduction and rape" in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, official sources said today.
The woman, a resident of Gujjardara-Manzgam, reported to police that she was abducted by some unidentified army personnel from Kheranbal Behak on July 19 and gang raped, they said.
She claimed that she was released last night by the armymen.
Senior police officers rushed to the concerned police station in Kulgam and recorded her statement, the sources said, adding the woman will be sent for medical examination.
Meanwhile, tension gripped Damhal Hanjipora, 110 kms from here, as people came out on the roads and held demonstrations demanding stern action against the erring personnel, the sources said, describing the situation as tense but under control.
Defence spokesman, Lt Col J S Brar was not immediately available for comments as he was out of town.
Late in the evening, police registered a case under sections 366 (abduction) and 376 (rape) of Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
Meanwhile, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded a thorough probe into the case.
Reacting to the allegations, the J&K Chief Minister had a series of tweets:
"Rept filed in presence of Magistrate, SIT constituted,
Medical Examination to be conducted. All we need is for accuser to
identify guilty."
"Size of army unit in area less than 20 strong so identification
parade won't be a problem. Guilty won't be spared either AFSPA or no
AFSPA."
"But
unlike most of you I don't have the luxury of jumping to conclusions so
will wait for the woman to make a positive identification."
