First time users of the internet can now literally find the web at their doorstep, as Google India has launched a customised internet-enabled bus which will touch 15 towns in Tamil Nadu to rope in more people on the information superhighway.

The bus has four booths based on four themes - information, communication, entertainment and education, with informative content in English and Tamil.

An audio visual format informs users of the services being offered.

"The bus will cover 15 towns across the state over one and a half months. We want to educate people about the benefit of internet and this bus would make them understand the usage of internet in a much more effective way," Google India (Research and Development) Centre Head Prasad Ram said.

Google India Product Manager Prem Ramaswami told PTI that this was akin to a pilot project. Based on the response, the project would be started in other states as well.

"It is like a pilot study (for us). More than 19% of Tamilians prefer Google Tamil to access the internet and that is also one of the reasons for launching the bus project from Tamil Nadu," he said.

Once the project was completed, they would be able to share some vital information with the state government as well, he added.
