Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, along with two non-Congress MLAs from Jammu and Kashmir, today visited the grave of former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in his home town Bijbehara in south Kashmir and offered special prayers.
Sayeed, the third chief minister to die in office after Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and G M Sadiq, was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard last evening.
Besides several Congress leaders from the state unit, Azad was accompanied by CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and Independent MLA from Khansahib H M Yaseen during his visit to the Sayeed's grave.
With BJP yet to convey to Governor N N Vohra its support to Mehbooba Mufti as the next chief minister of the state, the development has given rise to speculations that Congress, with support of Tarigami and a few independents, might be throwing up an option to the PDP for forming an alternative alliance minus BJP.
JKPCC chief G A Mir and three Congress MLAs also accompanied Azad to Sayeed's grave for offering 'Fateh Khawani' (special prayer for deceased), a party spokesman said.
