A 24-hour Doordarshan channel dedicated to farmers and agriculture is likely to go on air by mid-April with the national broadcaster making hectic preparations for its launch.

At a meeting today, Information and Broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley is learnt to have taken stock of the progress made by Doordarshan towards the launch of the channel, to be called DD Kisan.

Sources said it had emerged in the discussions that the channel may be ready by mid-April and it was probable that it could be launched on the occasion of 'Baisakhi', which falls on the 14th of that month.

The government and Prasar Bharati have been working on finalising the plans for launching the channel at the earliest.

Ahead of the general elections last year, BJP had declared that, if voted to power, it would "explore setting up regional Kisan TV channels".

Jaitley, who is also the Finance Minister, in his Budget speech for 2014-15 had said that a sum of Rs 100 crore has been set aside for Kisan channel to provide real-time information on various farming and agricultural matters.

Apart from Jaitley and MoS in I&B ministry, Rajyavardhan Rathore, I&B secretary Bimal Julka, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar and senior DD officials are learnt to have been present at the meeting today.

All-India Radio and Doordarshan played an important role in spreading awareness about the Green Revolution, officials said, adding that running a channel based on agriculture for farmers was also in line with Prasar Bharati's mandate as a public service broadcaster.

The Prasar Bharati Act states that the public broadcaster should pay special attention to the field of agriculture and rural development along with areas like education, literacy, environment, health and family welfare and science and technology.
