According to Megha Sawant, her husband was `innocent' and implicated due to factionalism within the police force.
"There are no allegations of any pecuniary benefit gained by him," Megha Sawant has said, adding that her husband was under tremendous pressure to nab the culprits of the serial bomb blasts of 2003, as a result of which his priorities were different.
"He had no time to look into this case (stamps case) as he was very busy in his fight against the terrorists involved in bomb blast," she has said.
DCP Sawant was the third senior police official of Mumbai Crime Branch after Commissioner, R S Sharma and Joint Police Commissioner (Crime), S S Vagal, who were arrested by Special Investigation Team (SIT) for their alleged involvement in the fake stamps scam.
He has been charged of supervisory lapses particularly of not proceeding with disciplinary action against subordinate Crime Branch men who were allegedly hand in glove with scamster, Abdul Karim Telgi.
According to Megha Sawant, her husband is credited with striking a crippling blow to underworld activities and gangwars, and was assigned the job of investigating the serial bomb blasts and used to slog for over 17 hours a day to bring the culprits to book.
In such circumstances, how can he look into other matters, she has asked.
She has pointed out that neither the Subodh Jaiswal report or the comments of Additional DGP O P Bali on it have mentioned complicity of Pradip Sawant with the organised crime syndicate.
On the other hand, those police officers who have been indicted in the report have been shown as witnesses.
Megha Sawant has exclaimed why SIT has adopted such dual standards, and has alleged that this was a `misuse of MCOCA'.
Pradip Sawant, who is a state police service officer of the 1986 batch, has had a brilliant academic record. He also topped the MPSC exam in which he was selected for police service, and also topped his batch at Police Training School at Nasik.
He has been awarded the President's Medal for meritorious service and the DGP's commendation insignia.
