Panaji, Jun 4 (PTI) Congress legislator Gurudas Gawas representing Pale constituency expired after a prolonged illness this afternoon.

Sources close to Gawas family said the 40-year-old legislator expired in Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital where he was admitted for heart ailment.

Gawas, a Congress loyalist, was a first time legislator from Pale constituency. After almost two decades, Congress won the constituency with Gawas' win.

Pale, a constituency comprising of iron ore mining belt, was a bastion of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and later BJP.

Gawas defeated his nearest rival BJP's sitting MLA Suresh Amonkar in the June 2 state assembly elections, last year.

He was also the Chairman of Goa Handicrafts and Rural Artisans Development Corporation.
