The body of former Union Minister Arjun Singh, who died yesterday, reached the Bamrauli airport on the outskirts of the city today from where his mortal remains were taken to his native place in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh for the last rites.

A large number of Congress leaders, led by the party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, state vice-president Shekhar Bahuguna and city unit chief and Mayor Chaudhary Jitendra Nath Singh visited the airport to pay their last respect to the late leader.

The Congress leaders also recalled Singh's "long and deep relationship" with the city, in particular his association with the Allahabad University where he had studied and which got the status of a central varsity when he was the Union HRD Minister.

Singh's body was airlifted, by a special aircraft, to his native place Churhat in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh where cremation ceremony is likely to take place tomorrow.
