BJP Seeks Institution of Murder Case Against Officials

Not satisfied with transfer of officials for the October 3 stampede near Gandhi Maidan here that claimed 33 lives, BJP today staged a dharna and demanded institution of a murder case against the officials.

"Mere transfer is no punishement for these officials whose negligence resulted in death of 33 persons and injuries to 29 others... It is a clear cut case of murder, hence a case should be instituted against them under IPC section 302 (punishment for murder)," senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said at a protest dharna near Kargil chowk here.

Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha, who also sat on the dharna, echoed him.

"Transfer is no punishment. More severe punishement should be meted out to the officials like stopping their increment," Sinha, Lok Sabha member from Patna Saheb, said.

Patna Divisional Commissioner N Vijaylaxmi, DIG, Patna Range Ajitabh Kumar, Patna District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj were removed from their posts by Bihar government yesterday, two days after the stampede.

Sushil Modi, who was deputy chief minister in the previous NDA government and is the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, made a scathing comment on Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, saying, "The officials were found partying in posh Maurya hotel, the CM went to his native place in Gaya to celebrate Dusshera with family while people were dying on the streets in Patna."

He described as 'eyewash' the probe by Principal Secretary Home Amir Subhani and Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Gupteshwar Pandey ordered by the state government and instead demanded an inquiry by an all party team into the stampede.

The BJP leader visited homes of several stampede victims, including that of a person named Rinku Mistri of Mushtafapur village in Punpun block whose wife had died in the stampede.
