Former Karnataka Chief Minister S Bangarappa today returned to Congress after being out of it for three years as the party described this his "last homecoming".
"I am happy...This is to keep the communal forces at bay and out of power," he told a press conference here.
AICC General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka Ghulam Nabi Azad said Bangrappa joining the party would help Congress and secular forces in the state.
Bangarappa, who had recently resigned as a member of Lok Sabha and the state presidentship of Samajwadi Party, met party President Sonia Gandhi earlier in the day.
Asked what was the guarantee that Bangarappa, who quit four times and returned to it on as many occasions, would not shift to any other party, Azad said "it is the last homecoming. He is not going anywhere else".
