Bandh in Uttaranchal after death of student leader

In Dehra Dun, most shops, commercial establishments, schools and colleges remaining closed. The bandh was complete in all major towns in Garhwal region.

Gambhir Kathait, who attempted self-immolation Saturday during a procession demanding withdrawal of CBI cases against activists of Uttarakhand statehood movement, had died in a hospital in New Delhi yesterday.

Meanwhile, a large number of people gathered at Old Tehri town to perform the last rites of Kathait amid tight security arrangements, a report said.

However, the bandh failed to evoke reponse in Kumaon region including hill resort of Nainital. But Nainital District Administration has declared a two-day holiday for schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.
